Introducing Weave-Along 16: The Spiral Split Split-Loom Necklace
We’ve had a lot of people ask for instructions on how to make a split-loom necklace. That is where the inspiration for this weave-along came from. This relatively simple piece has an ornate feel and would look lovely with anything from jeans and a t-shirt to a fancy black dress. Want to learn the techniques used to make this necklace?
Grab your loom and let’s get started!

What’s a Weave-Along?
A weave-along is a FREE online course. Claudia Chase and Elena Zuyok of Mirrix Looms will lead participants through a project woven on a loom. Every Sunday participants will get an email going over what participants worked on week before and giving instructions and tips for the week ahead. Participants are encouraged to ask questions and engage with other members of the weave-along via email and social media sites including the Mirrix Facebook Page, Mirrix Facebook Group and Mirrix Ravelry Page. This is a community event!
Please note you must be using a genuine Mirrix Loom to participate
What You’ll Need:
–A Mirrix Loom, 8″ or larger with a 14 dent coil
-A beading needle (we love Tulip Bead Weaving Needles)
-Three colors of 11/0 Delica beads (10 gram tubes of each color). We used copper, turquoise and purple bead colors, but you can use anything you want.
–C-Lon beading thread (or other beading thread)
-Dagger beads

Split Loom Necklace-WIP
After several redesigns from my last post, the remake I came up with, I was finally happy with. Thursday morning of this past week, I found a moment to warp the loom. I was very precise and accurate this time, as I didn’t have time constraints. I decided to do this split loom in round Miyuki beads, instead of Delica beads. I have done 2 split loom pieces before and one was Czech seed beads and the next one was Delicas, so I thought I would try Miyuki rounds this time, and quite glad I did! The loomed bead ‘fabric’ feels absolutely luscious in my hand. It is super soft and beautifully supple.
This is a work in progress photo from a few days ago.
Initially, I wanted this to be a full around the neck wrap (no closure, just put over your head), mounted on lambskin. Since I have finished the work and an hour or so ago took it off the loom, I have decided I would put a closure on it, still mount it on leather, except I found amazingly gorgeous and even more supple goatskin in my leather stash. So goatskin will back this piece and it won’t be as ‘stiff’ as lambskin would have been. The lambskin I have is soft and supple, but not as much as the goatskin. By putting a backing on this, this will also allow fringe, if I should chose to, and I think this will also make it more sturdy for longer durability, less fragility to the owner.
I have woven in a bulk of the threads. The threads I have left to weave in are going to be stitched directly through the leather and tied off on the back side. When all of that is done, I will add a second leather back and put them together as I would a bead embroidery. I bought 2 gorgeous buttons for the closure today. Not sure if I will use one or both yet. Below is what it looks like right now.
It is a nice length. I didn’t use pure white, the white is a gold-lined white opal in color with opaque black as the contrast. I am going to try to finish it this week, but for now I have to put it down for a few days.

Finishing Split Loom Piece
Good morning my loom friends! I have a photo I took the other day after I took the piece off from the loom and wove in the center threads. Today I am going to work on finishing this piece and take many pics along the way. I did take a video of the piece when I took it off from the loom. Due to technical difficulties, it won’t be available until next week. I am hoping to have ALL the tech things straightened out by then! (long, aggravating story LOL)
I am really excited to get this finished so I can see it all done LOL I haven’t made a split loom piece in a while and have missed it, so I plan on many many more! This will have graduated apatite faceted rondelles on the fringe. I have been hoarding them and they evidently were waiting to be on here 😉 Perfect match!
Weaving the threads in on this piece has been a breeze. The Delicas accommodate the threads very nicely and I have not had problem one doing that! I am debating on the closure as it stands right now. I may make a double sided toggle/buttonholes like I did on my first split loomed piece. It looks nice and can work for either right hand of left hand closings and just balances the back out..which is also cool LOL
Have a great day and I shall post more on here tomorrow!
